The Journey to Private AI: Why We Built amazee.ai

May 26, 2025By Michael Schmid7 min read

In Short: The Roadmap to Sovereign, Private AI

  • The Origin Story: Leveraging a decade of open source containerization experience with Lagoon (the Kubernetes-based delivery platform), amazee.io launched amazee.ai to resolve the transparency and compliance crisis plaguing modern generative AI.
  • The Privacy Mandate: Standard cloud-based AI tools process inputs in undefined, globally scattered data centers. amazee.ai shifts control back to the enterprise by guaranteeing your prompts, queries, and vector embeddings never leave your chosen geographic region.
  • Production-Ready for Drupal: The first plug-and-play integration brings secure AI text summarization, content indexing, and context-aware vector search directly into Drupal sites, eliminating complex DevOps setups.
  • Future-Proofing via Abstraction: The platform's roadmap introduces PrivateGPT (a sandboxed ChatGPT alternative powered by open source models) and an OpenAI-compatible API that lets developers migrate workloads in minutes without rewriting core code.

Artificial intelligence is having a moment. From large language models to AI copilots, businesses and developers are rushing to adopt new tools that promise speed, automation, and entirely new capabilities. But with all this excitement, something important is getting lost in the noise:

When you use AI tools, where does your data go? Who sees it? Is it even possible to know?

At amazee.io, these questions matter deeply to us. That's why we built amazee.ai, a suite of AI tools that give you all the benefits of modern AI while guaranteeing one thing most providers can't: your data stays within your control.

From Open Source Hosting to Sovereignty

Back in 2016, we launched amazee.io to solve a very specific pain point: developers were spending too much time wrestling with infrastructure instead of building great applications. To solve that, we built amazee.io, an open source application delivery platform that abstracted away the complexity of Kubernetes. It made deploying code easy and reliable. Over the years, our mission has expanded: we're helping developers move faster without giving up control. We have built tools that empower teams, respect privacy, and support open source communities. We have never believed that "cloud-native" has to mean "cloud-dependent."

When AI Got Big (and Got Risky)

In 2023, as generative AI exploded, we saw something we recognized from the early days of cloud: incredible power and huge potential, but a serious lack of transparency. Many companies jumped on the AI bandwagon, only to hit a wall when they started asking basic questions:

  • Where is our data being processed?
  • Who has access to it?
  • Can we guarantee compliance with local laws?

Most AI services couldn't provide clear answers. They processed inputs in data centers scattered around the world, often with vague terms, unclear storage rules, and few privacy guarantees. For privacy-conscious industries, highly regulated sectors, or even companies with internal data policies, this was a dealbreaker.

We saw the same pattern repeat itself: exciting technology, but built in ways that excluded the people who needed control the most. So we decided to fix it.

Private AI, On Your Terms

amazee.ai is our answer to the privacy crisis in AI. We built it with a simple but powerful promise: You decide where your data is processed and stored, and we make sure it stays there.

Our infrastructure guarantees that your AI queries, vector embeddings, and custom models never leave your chosen region. We use open source tooling, industry best practices, and modern deployment techniques to give you confidence, compliance, and speed. All at once.

No dark data lakes. No silent retention. No hidden surveillance.

The First Product: AI for the Drupal Community

Our first launch is a plug-and-play AI provider for Drupal. It lets you easily integrate powerful AI features like text summarization, question answering, and search directly into your Drupal site, all running on amazee.ai's private infrastructure. Users can even enable vector search for smarter, context-aware results without shipping their data off to a mystery cloud.

No new DevOps skills or fine-tuning are needed. Just real AI capabilities with full transparency, built to work seamlessly with your existing setup.

Coming Soon: Private API Access

We're not stopping at Drupal.

For developers building their own applications, we've got you covered there, too. We're launching an OpenAI-compatible Private AI API Gateway that connects to powerful open source models with the same API format you're already using. That means you can switch from a commercial provider to amazee.ai in minutes; no code rewrite, no compromises, and no guessing where your data ends up.

This Is Only the Beginning

We believe AI should be opentransparent, and sovereign. Developers and businesses deserve more than vague assurances; they deserve clear, trustworthy solutions. And we believe the future of AI shouldn't be locked inside someone else's black box.

amazee.ai is our step toward a future in which you don't have to choose between powerful AI and responsible data practices.

Your data.

Your tools.

Your rules.
